Single or Double Opt--In?

You heard the message before. Your e-mail list is the most important key to your future online success. The best list is a highly targeted and responsive opt--in list. At present, the single opt--in method is the preferred approach to building a list. However, Internet promoting considerations suggest the list owner should use the double opt--in or confirmation method to build a list. What is the right method for you?

Opt--In Process
-----------------


The opt--in process means that an individual has requested to be on your mailing list before you a^dd them. At the same time, the individual must be given the ability to opt--out (unsubscribe) from your mailing list at any time.

In the single opt--in method, an individual registers to join your e-mail list by submitting their name and e-mail a^ddress. As a result, the individual is giving you their permission to send them e-mail messages that promote specific products and services or discuss specific topics.

In the double opt--in or confirmation method, an individual registers to join your e-mail list in the same manner as the single opt--in method. In response, the individual receives an e-mail from you to confirm their e-mail a^ddress. Upon receipt of the confirmation e-mail, you a^dd the individual to your mailing list. If the confirmation e-mail reply is not received, do not a^dd the individual to your list. However, you may want to follow-up with the non-confirming individuals and give them another chance to confirm.

Autoresponder
------------------

Your autoresponder should have the capability to implement the double opt--in method. If not, you can setup one very easily. Set up two separate campaigns in your autoresponder (let’s call them "A" and "B"). Campaign "A" receives the initial single opt--in request from your visitor. In turn, the message from campaign "A" contains a link the subscriber clicks to send a confirmation e-mail to campaign "B." The "blank" e-mail sent to campaign "B" is from the subscriber’s "default" e-mail system containing their confirming name and e-mail a^ddress.

Subscriber Relationship
----------------------------

To be successful in e-mail promotions, you must build a personal one-on-one relationship with your prospects or clients. The success in your online mark^eting hinges on maintaining and building this personal relationship. As the list owner, you >need to establish the initial relationship by:

* Obtaining permission from your subscribers to send them promotional messages and other types of useful information

* Practicing respect for the privacy of your subscribers.

Implicit Opt--In
--------------------


An implicit opt--in situation may exist as the result of permission that is not granted but is derived from another relationship. An example would be when an individual has previously purchased from you. In this situation, you may be able to send limited but unsolicited e-mails to that individual under this pre-existing relationship. However, this level of implied permission must never be exceeded without the expressed consent of the individual.

Considerations
------------------


As a list owner, you work hard to drive traffic to your web site and get subscribers to join your list. Individuals respond and decide to join your list. They submit their name and e-mail a^ddress. Great! All that hard work of publishing a newsletter, writing ezine articles and promoting is finally paying off. You have genuine subscribers. Or do you?

As it turns out, some of these new subscribers did not sign-up on your mailing list, do not want to receive your mark^eting messages or forgot they signed up. You run the risk of getting sp^am complaints when you send e-mail messages to this group of individuals. This can be a serious problem to your online business. Open your e-mail and look at the flood of unwanted messages. Scan and listen to the media reports. Sp^am is a continuing problem.

MessageLabs, a provider of e-mail security services, monitors e-mail messages on a worldwide basis. Out of 157 million e-mails tracked in July 2003, they reported that 80 million e-mails were sp^am. That’s a 51 percent sp^am rate. In December 2003, MessageLabs reported a 77 percent increase in year-to-year sp^am volume. These numbers are incredible.

It is very important that you get your e-mail messages into the hands of individuals that want to receive your messages. As a result, the normal single opt--in may no longer be sufficient. Consider the double opt--in method as an alternate approach. Look at the pros and cons of each approach to find out what is right for you.

Single Opt--In Discussion
--------------------------------


An argument in favor of single opt--in states it is simpler to subscribe to a single opt--in list than the double opt--in list. Even though the single opt--in method has more un-subscribes, the net number of subscribers is generally higher than with the double opt--in method.

An argument against the single opt--in method states that new subscribers may be:

* Tire kickers only looking for the fr^ee bonus,
* Not really interested in your mark^eting efforts,
* Can not remember signing-up,
* Did not sign-up due to someone else signing them up or
* There was a typographical mistake in the sign-up process.

How many of the single opt--in subscribers fall into this "problem" category? Depending on the reporting source it ranges from 0 to 30 percent. Malice or typo mistakes can be mitigated in the confirmation process if the recipient does not confirm. As a result, you will probably lose these people in short order through the unsubscribe process. However, the most serious consequence is the sp^am complaint. This can cause you significant grief and wasted time defending yourself against the ISP that wants to shut you down.

Double Opt--In Discussion
---------------------------------


Depending on your situation, you may need or want to start using the double opt--in method. This does not mean you trash all your current single opt--in subscribers and ask them to double opt--in. You should be able to continue your e-mail mark^eting to these individuals if you have a healthy business relationship with them. Consider the double opt--in method if you are in the early stages of building your list or want to increase your existing list.

The double opt--in method may be your best solution to the problem of single opt--in subscribers that don’t want to be on your mailing list. The confirmation process is your protection against individuals claiming you are sending them unsolicited e-mail. The double opt--in method establishes that:

* The e-mail a^ddress is good.
* The responder is the owner of the e-mail a^ddress.
* The responder wants to join your mailing list.

Some significant reasons to use double opt--in include:

* To attract interested and responsive subscribers in your targeted niche.
* Improve the chances your subscribers will see your message.
* A^dvertisers will place a higher value on your receptive subscriber list.
* Ability to more effectively market your products and services to your list.
* Documented proof that subscribers requested to be on your mailing list.
* Reduce the probability your ISP will shut you down due to a sp^am complaint.

An argument against double opt--in is that the number of individuals completing the confirmation stage is lower than those signing-up in the initial subscription stage. This is usually due to:

* Faulty typing by the subscriber.
* Malice by the subscriber.
* Problem with input processing at the point of sign-up.
* Wrong or incomplete information at sign-up becomes a surprise during confirmation.
* The request for confirmation looks like a legal document.

As a result, it should be expected that the recipient will not complete the confirmation phase. The list operator should make the confirmation request as short and simple as possible.

CAN-SPAM Act of 2003
-------------------------------


The CAN-SPAM (‘Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing’) Act of 2003 took effect January 1, 2004.

I am not a lawyer. Consult your lawyer to learn about this new law. You can view the law text at website ‘thomas.loc.gov” (search: S.877.ENR).

Among other requirements, the Act requires that every commercial e-mail message must:

* Provide a clear and conspicuous notice that it is an advertisement or solicitation (not required if the recipient had previously given affirmative consent to receive the commercial e-mail message).

* Provide recipients with the ability to “decline to receive additional commercial e-mail from the same source” (i.e., opt--out).

* Provide the sender’s valid physical postal address.

Conclusion
--------------
Before I reviewed the CAN-SPAM Act, I concluded there is no easy solution to the opt--in issue. As the marketer, you should weigh the pros and cons of each opt--in method, perform tests on each method and then select the method that is right for your business.

However, the new law lets me restate this conclusion. If not followed, the provisions contained in the new law could seriously hurt you as an Internet business owner. You could be exposing yourself to unnecessary liability risks if you use or continue to use the single opt--in method to conduct your business.

In conclusion, use the double opt--in (confirmation) method and adhere to all the provisions in the new CAN-SPAM law.

Well first of all you need to believe that it's possible, well because, let's face it you've seen and heard others making millions using Email Marketing... "right"?

So if that's the case, then you definitely can take advantage of this opportunity and concept and make at least $100,000 a year.

My other Articles I did talk about how you can even make more than $100,000 a year using Email Marketing, but since a lot of you out there are very skeptical when it come to Email Marketing, I've decided to help you who are still skeptics take baby steps.

Lets start off with learning how to make $50,000+ a year using Email Marketing and then quickly rise up to $100,000 in a short period of time.

Again, first of all you need to believe that it's actually possible for you to achieve this, for whom to some people may seem impossible, however you cannot think that way, it's absolutely very possible.

Second of all you need to do some research to see how other people are using email marketing to make a killing of the Internet, therefore if they can make an Amazing income using Email Marketing and you learn half of what they know, them you can easily make at least $100,000 a year using Email Marketing.

After doing some research on some of these Email Marketing Gurus, get ready to invest a few hundred dollars, which will soon be your greatest investment when you start generating a 6 figure salary using Email Marketing

So what you will do is get a hold of an autoresponder, an Email Marketing Software with a built in extractor, and a few targeted email lists.

You'll basically be using the autoresponder in most of your Ads to build a solid list of prospect and when you do that you can offer them your products and services at daily or weekly mailing intervals...

While you're doing this use the Email Marketing Software for some of the other tasks like extracting only targeted email in your industry and learn about other features and benefits of the Email Marketing Software that you can use to speed up the rate of your email advertising campaigns.

Test some of the targeted email lists that you've purchased, and try to collect a variety of them in your undustry so that you can start your very own advertising network to reach people in a global scale.

Run these Email Marketing Campaigns deligently until you see some results and have established a large market of individual who may be interested in your products and services.

Start catering to these markets with a product that is at least $40 to $50. Make sure that the product or service that you're providing them is valuable, then you can easily start making any where from $40,000 a year to $50,000 a year selling this product through Email Marketing.

And if You wanted to increase your profits to $100,000+ a year, all you have to do is start selling this valuable product in 2 times quantity of the market, or push the product through advertising 2 times faster that same year, or just double the amount that you normally spend... Or another Powerful way would be to increase the price of that valuable product to $100 a peice or develope a secondary product that you can sell to your current customers or new customers that can cost around $100 or $150 a peice...

Now if that doesn't get you making over $100,000 a year, I don't know what will, if you keep trying and are always on top of thing with your Email Marketing and Advertising Promotions, you can't help but make over $100,000 a year.

An opt-in list is the absolute most effective marketing tool available on the Internet. Not only do they provide you with a direct line of communication with your target market, but they also enable you to develop a trusting relationship with your subscribers.

The key to using an opt-in list effectively is to develop a large subscriber base. Not just a large subscriber base, but a list of targeted potential customers.

Although a large opt-in list is an important part of your success, the quality of your publication is even more important -- both will play a very important role.

If you really want to build a massive opt-in list, you MUST provide your potential subscribers with an incentive. The competition on the Internet is fierce. No longer can you simply tell your visitors what your publication will provide and expect a large percentage to subscribe. It simply won't work. You MUST give your visitors a reason to subscribe.

Using incentives is a highly effective method of obtaining
new subscribers. However, your incentive must be of value

When a visitor enters your site, an alert box will appear. This alert box should display text requesting their subscription and information about your incentive. Your visitor can choose to click on "OK" to subscribe or "Cancel" to close the alert.

The alert box is displayed via a script that extracts your visitors' name and email address. If they choose to subscribe, it then sends their subscription request, via email, to your subscription address and adds it to your database. I hope you totally agree with me that Email Marketing is a form of free advertising, especially if you do most of the email marketing yourself with the best email marketing software, email marketing extractors and email marketing mailing lists.

I always label email marketing as a form of free advertising to the next level and say that email marketing is the best form of free advertising known to man. "Really?"

Well because email is still free... you just have to extract the right emails and have the right lists.

You might think that I'm exaggerating a little bit, but I'm telling it to you like I see it, it's just pure common sense, like suppose that you had email addresses of 200,000 people who are in your target market and will be interested in buying your products and services?

Wow, How many sales can you make from that? You can easily make 20,000 sales, because remember that these people are already interested in buying your products and services. And if the product that you are selling is $39.95, you can easily bring in $799,000 in sales.

And this can be done almost for free if you can spend some of your time doing research on how to locate these lists of 200,000 people who will already be interested on what you are selling.

So is it really worth the time? Well absolutely if it takes you even 2 years to locate these people, you can still bring in $399,500 a year and if it takes you 4 years to locate them you can still bring in $199,750 a year. I think it's totally worth it, even if it means spending more time on it...

One of the secrets to all this is to have fun doing it, make it into a fun game that you can play, so that it motivates you to stay on track and enjoy what you're doing and make money at the same time.

Free Advertising through Email Marketing is the way to go if you don't have thousands of dollars to invest. Even the multi- million dollar companies are using this form of free advertising to make up for the loses they've encountered with other forms of high cost advertising and marketing.

So I think it's extremely critical that larger companies also get into this opportunity. Because there's a lot of large companies out there that have a lower (ROI)return on Investment then some of the smaller businesses. Therefore free advertising through email marketing can help suppliment their income and boost up their ROI(return in Investment)...

How?

Well if a company is only making 2 times his money back in other words, doubling their investment most of the time, which is pretty good by the way... at the same time if they have other high business expenses to pay for their overall profits might diminish and they will no longer be doubling their income put only increasing in their profits by a little bit.

Furthermore if they decide to use email marketing and specifically opt-in email marketing to their customer lists and other targeted lists which will cost them almost nothing and increase their sales that way, then their overall ROI(return on investment) will also increase and they'll be more flexible and spend more money on making the business grow, taking their employees for a free dinner and even taking their family on a longer vacation.

So I hope you see how critical this is... Increasing your ROI is always good and why not use free advertising through email marketing to do that.

Kick-Starting E-mail Profits Growth From One Single Shot!

Perhaps the most critical step in guaranteeing the success
of your e-mail promotions is to send your messages to a
targeted list of opt-in subscribers who have specifically
requested to receive information on a particular topic from
you. That's your "in-house" email list.

Sooner or later, you'll face the same challenge: how to
build a list of qualified, targeted prospects from scratch.

When it comes to building an e-mail list, online marketers
tend to spread on too many options. Offen, they neglect to
focus on a single promotion 'til the end and exploit to the
fullest potential. Here's an example.

Suppose you run a newsletter and have a web page or popup
window which invite prospects to subscribe. As a reward
for giving their e-mail address, you offer them a bonus.

That's fine -- but not enought! You are loosing money simply
by leaving empty profit places in your message.

Wouldn't be nice to build actually 3 different mailing lists
from one "stroke"? Of course! For better understanding, I'll
stick with the same newsletter example. So, clear-up your
newsletter invitation and insert couple of extra carefully
selected phrases. Follow these steps:

Step #1 --> Insert a Newsletter Subscription

Obviously, this is your primer objective. A new subscriber
is a potential new source of profit. It is a common sense to
tell people what to expect up front. The more relevant seems
your offer to the desired relationship, the better.

Step #2 --> Insert a Special Report

Be smart: upload your report to an autoresponder. The trick
is to provide high-quality content AND an offer that will
earn you a profit!

You know the rest: the autoresponder send out automatically
additional reports and follow-up messages to those who get
the initial report. The results: more sales and profits.

Step #3 --> Insert an eCourse

Each lesson of the eCourse provides at least one offer (and
usually multiple offers) for the reader to consider. Many
buy, some don't. But it's another automated profit system.

Step #4 --> Insert a Mystery Bonus

Mystery bonus? Yes! People universally love mystery. Be sure
you won't let the prospects know what is all about up until
they subscribe.

What you need at this point: an ebook that is coded with
your own affiliate links! (Psst... invite them to pass it
out as an incentive!)

The final results: 3 separate lists (from newsletter
subscription, special report, and ecourse) and a viral
marketing tool (the mystery ebook)! Everything easy to set-
up and ready to upload to your web site in less than an hour
of work. Not bad!

Things to remember BEFORE you implement this e-mail
marketing strategy:

- be accurate and clear with your messages.

- spell out features/benefits/advantages in your offer.

- don't go only after e-mail list quantity. Your e-mail list
should balance QUALITY with QUANTITY issues.

- ALWAYS provide high-quality content.

- implement your system ON EVERY PAGE of your web site.

- always use professional sequential autoresponders to
PERSONALIZE each of your e-mail messages.

- test subject lines and messages until you get the highest
results.

- check your messages to make sure links work properly.

- use high quality graphics to first-impress.

- NEVER forget to 'THANK YOU' prospects once they give you
their e-mail address.

- ALWAYS allow prospects to self-remove from your e-mail
lists.
